“we are on the verge of a drastic emergency.”

“one day a mysterious package arrived at the visionaire offices. it was a large box containing more than four-hundred original memos from diana vreeland to her staff at vogue. the package had been sent to us by a contributor who preferred to remain anonymous but who had been on the receiving end of some of this legendary inter-office correspondence.”

diana vreeland would dictate her infamous memos to her doting secretary from the altar of her bathroom every morning. if you’d only heard a whisper about ms. vreeland, you’d  already know that she, and her memos were the stuff of legend and that they were extraordinarily one-of-a kind in their insight into fashion at the time, (also? a little bit hilarious.)

these nearly 150 memos would be a dream to read, and would be the only inspiration needed to swipe a pot of rouge on your cheeks, and to make sure your nails were forever fire-engine red, just to finish the laundry.

it could be because i just got off the phone with my mother, or because it’s that super-festive-with-a-side-order-of-melancholy time of year, but suddenly i feel the need for speed –  if speed, of course, amounts to a tipple and not caring how many serving sizes there are in family-super-fun-sized bag of chips.

the holidays are the one time during the year when going overboard is above board, and if you’re not feeling full and flush, you’re not doing it right. so, let’s find our way clear to imbibing and indulging right.

if you find yourself cornered at your company’s holiday party, and your boss is still barking out orders; take a seat at your desk, and take a sip with this ‘to my health’ flask. your three walls of cubicle will never tell:

if to you gingerbread is made for houses alone, perhaps something a bit more french is for you? let them eat cake, with a rather unexpected holiday visit from marie antoinette:

and finally, if nothing but chocolate will dull the ache of a full week with your extended family, just dive head first into a warm and inviting pool of soma’s mayan hot chocolate. you’ll find it completely restorative. you could even splash whatever’s in that flask into it for a double dose of holiday spirit.

i could do the appropriate thing and be the modern day, (yet, much more feminine) robin hood, and assemble a holiday gift list – but let’s be completely candid here, gifting lists are just the ramblings of one’s most inner desires, on a totally superficial level. since this is a pretty great level to be on, forthwith i present a list of items that i, and possibly you, would be very pleased to unwrap on whatever holiday you happen to celebrate. (or, any given tuesday. or wednesday.)

December 5, 2012

this jogged past my memory this morning. enjoy.

i wanted a short, dark bob. with a smooth fringe.

while we’re at it, i also wanted smoke-swept eyes lined in charcoal, and a little bow mouth. put it all together, i suppose i wanted to be something a little like louise brooks, but who could blame me? (not even greta garbo.)

what i’ve ended up with however, is something a bit bigger and not anything even remotely resembling smoooooth. what i’ve got is a mass of curls, think shirley temple but frizzier, and on a grown woman. and though most people who come into contact with my mane want to scrunch it into crinkly oblivion, yet my goal is to get it to submit, if just a little bit. and if you’re looking for something that takes it down a notch, from corkscrews to wonderfully tousled, with a just a hint of that slept-in look, bumble and bumble’s bb. texture (un)dressing creme might hit that slightly gritty sweet spot.

(i’ve spent close to a squillion dollars on hair products, this one’s pretty close to perfect.)
