not to put too fine a point on it, but kate spade’s aesthetic has never really been my cup of tea. ultimately, the over-the-top girlishness of it all sends me running – allover florals are meant for vases and my grandmother’s sofa, not on a cocktail dress, (though i can totally see how rocking a bright pink cross-body would lift anyone’s spirit.)

launched, today however, spade’s younger-sister line, saturday is the complete bee’s knees. geometric prints, modern cuts and lower price points make all those happy-buying synapses fire. (their handful of home-wares are pretty great, too.)*

*this is 100% not a sponsored post, but by all means, fine people at saturday, there’s a stripy dress, (among other things), that i’d love to get my paws on.

we wanted to step off our island and add the color of the third world. we got gold cigarette paper and stuck it around our teeth. we really did look like pirates and dressed to look the part. // v. westwood

got pinterest? (i’m so lame.)

i usually type these wee bits up in my living room, staring at a screen, and an artless wall.

i’m currently, however, staring out at this:

and it’s lovely, sure – but it’s hot. and i’d forgotten about the hotness of heat. and if i’ve not made it perfectly clear, with subtle repetition, and not-so subtle repetition, i don’t get all fan-girly over the heat. it messes with my mood, it makes my hair huge, and it’s just generally… a bit irritating. give me nine months of october, with three months of late may and i’d be a happy camper. and yet – we can’t always get what we want, but we can make the hotness of it all just a little bit more tolerable with a wardrobe that makes the fieriness of summer a little more … fridge-y.

i quit smoking in 2004.

and then i completely and totally quit smoking after i got married in 2007.

there was the rule that a blind eye would be taken on european sojourns so that i too, could do as the romans did, and nonchalantly light up whenever (and wherever) i pleased.

i loved smoking. it’s an awful thing to say, but truly, i did. it was a constant and a reliable friend. of course, it was one of those (literally) toxic friends that eventually you just have to break up with, because well, they’re just bringing you down – not to mention making your clothes smell, rotting your teeth, doing unspeakable things to your lungs and stealing your boyfriends, money and jewelry.

i had to stop finally and thoroughly and of course it was simple – i had a kid. and since then, if i’ve ever had an urge, it was immediately quelled the moment i thought about giving her a hug and having her smell smoke on my clothes.

making a better decision is made ucomplicated when you’re making it for/because of someone else, and this principle has happily been applied to other parts of my life as well; like for all those creeping crow’s feet, cramped pores and frizzy hair – like all those balms, butters, and lotions i slather on, they’ve become just a bit simpler and little bit cleaner because of her, (without having to go full-on and head out to hug a tree.)

try as i might, my head and my heads will never agree on working together. crafty as i’d like to be, i’ll leave it to those who actually are to show you how it’s done.

these paper prisms are about as lovely and simple as you can get – and if i can get it together i’m going to try and do one myself. photos may or may not be following.
