“the house smelled musty and damp, and a little sweet, as if it were haunted by the ghosts of long-dead cookies.” // n. gaiman

the nose knows.

much like my very own beagle, i have a sense of smell that rivals most – this is both a blessing and a curse.

i can smell the tiniest whiffs of cinnamon, anywhere and in anything; the faintest scent of shampoo lingering in damp towels, the syrupy trace of my daughter’s neck. these are all a delight, to be sure. but see, there’s the other end of this spectrum – wherein i can sniff out the spots where my dog spitefully peed on the carpet upstairs, three years ago – i’ll sense the thick pong of rubbish drifting down the street on a muggy summer morning, the must of my hair, three days post wash.

suffice it to say of the five senses, scent can either do me in, or woo me. the choice of which i’d rather, is clear to sniff out.
