scent // reassembly

February 17, 2016

“i wish we could see perfumes as well as smell them. i’m sure they would be very beautiful.” // l.m. montgomery

and sometimes you get lucky, and you’re able to do both.

scent, and i’m sure i don’t need to tell you, is one of those nebulous, mysterious things in life that can take you almost anywhere you’d like to go.

your childhood bedroom, a late night drive in high-august, cigarettes, (that you don’t smoke anymore!) and songs that you made you cry; a dinner with friends that made your sides hurt from laughter; one rainy day in early april when you could finally smell the spring rise from the sidewalks.

scent is so wonderfully evocative, so blissfully nostalgic, that out of all the senses, it’s the one most powerfully tied to emotion and memory. it’s like a rubber-band, snapping you back in time and place, then there you are, snapped back to where you started.

scent isn’t just about what you smell, it’s about what you feel when you do – and that’s why reassembly, fragrance oils by josée gordon, (hi, josée!), have become a go-to for pulse points and moments of still, to being the only scent i carry in the shop. these little bottles of botanical fragrances carry more than their weight – hand-made with scents ranging from the woodsy to the city, to the sensual – these gorgeous fragrances will become a must-have; and i’m absolutely thrilled to introduce them to you and have them in the shop. find out more & find your perfect reassembly scent, here*.

“to make a living, craftiness is better than learnedness.” // p.a. caron de beaumarchais

i’ve got a crafty sort of kid.

it’s mandated that i stockpile all toilet and paper towel rolls, cardboard stay-flats that come with every delivery of stock for the main gig are kept in a not-so orderly stack under her desk. there are the teensiest shreds of paper and all sorts and sundry of card-stock hidden under every sofa, side chair, and corner of the house; of course, we can’t discount the dog hair, glitter, and general detritus of living. hello, my most epic of dust bunnies.

i love that my kid has ideas, an imagination that won’t quit, and tells a mean joke. i love that she’s found a use for the dozens of rolls of washi tape i cannot help but to keep buying. i love it. i don’t share her love of cutting things up, making scraps; of gluing fingers together or of colouring until the markers bleed through; but i wouldn’t dare let that stop her.

my craftiness lies in more organized pursuits – wrapping gifts, doing whatever it is i do here and then there’s having a rather acute appreciation of clothes that may or may not look like my kid might’ve coloured and cut those up as well.

“life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”// a. saunders

i have declared 2016 be the year i finally get the method of my madness organized.

to be neat is one thing – i can be, i have the ability to be; but to be organized is an entirely different, yet orderly, beast. on the surface of things it can seem that efficiency is ease, all thunderbirds are go – and they are, i can get things done, on time, and with much dependability.

don’t you dare rifle through my drawers.

it’s a nightmare in there – you won’t find whatever it is you’re looking for, i definitely can’t – and you might lose your hand in there as well.

so, 2016. we’re getting systemized. we’re getting organized. join me?

“you can’t blame gravity for falling in love.” // a. einstein

i don’t fall in love easily.

i do, however, crush hard and fast, but then the feelings fade as quickly and as stealthily as they crept in. it’s probably lucky for my husband that this has remained the case for the last almost-12 years; otherwise the work of love and marriage would be an ever harder toil; we like to keep it breezy over here.

when i do find myself dizzy with a little bit of lust, it’s rarely in response to a boy; i mean sure, i enjoy a ryan gosling just as much as the next gal (or guy), but when i swoon, it’s not really a blonde i go for. my type is strong, but silent – glints in the light, and only makes a scene when i drop it on the floor; understandably.

i admit, sometimes i need a diversion, and step out with handbags and sunglasses; but those are just flings, i’m serious about my tchotchke.

“AFFIANCED, pp. fitted with an ankle-ring for the ball-and-chain.” // a. bierce

i promise – i didn’t mean to be smart. (i couldn’t, even if i tried.)

it just happened that an idea + the date, (though it’s friday the 13th – which just amuses me even more) – happened to coincide with what i’ve heard is meant to be a very/the most romantic day indeed. and though i’m not one to partake, i say, you rock on with your bad selves, and have all the long-stemmed roses, teddy bears, chocolate hearts and, all the twinkly-romance you can muster. i for one, just happened to have balls and chains on the brain, (get your minds out of the gutter), and perhaps subconsciously – i’m thinking about my role in this topsy-turvy world, and how romance has changed since i was last single… OVER A DECADE AGO.

i guess i’m just someone’s ball and chain now. oh, these affairs of the heart, they’re so heavy…
