“it seems to me we can never give up longing and wishing while we are still alive. there are certain things we feel to be beautiful and good, and we must hunger for them.” // g. eliot

don’t be too quick to be fooled – mary anne evans knew of what she spoke – and called herself george so those who were prone to not take her seriously –would. and i, in turn, wouldn’t dream of taking her words lightly. so, if i were the wishing type, which i suppose i would call getting my hopes up – i’d be dropping hints all over the place so those keeping their ears to the ground wouldn’t have to guess to glean what i was longing for. it is, after all, a very valid point ms. evans made…

“innocence is like polished armor; it adorns and defends.” // r. south

of the many adjectives one could use to illustrate the likes of my very own brand of ladyhood, dainty would not be included within that mix. i’m sure there’s a handful of you out there who’d say the same.

though rather soft in body, the armor i choose to adorn myself with is decidedly not – and it’s exactly that dichotomy that i like so much. that one, (me, you, everyone at some point), can be so resolutely woman, but put on a hard angle and a sharp corner, and we become a contradiction.

that widely held, but positively ancient definition of femininity becomes momentarily obsolete when it seems like that necklace you’re wearing doubles as a weapon. beware the lady, you don’t really how strong she is… until you do.

“there’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” // swedish proverb

without hyperbole – on the coldest day of the year thus far, i decided to take a long, leisurely walk.

i’m not looking for a ribbon of distinction for the rather insignificant feat of moving my legs, this hour or so of wandering about – but let me be clear : it was a bracing sort of cold; the kind that makes your eyes water, the tip of your nose an icy peak, and your thighs burn red. but, i needed to get the fog out and the leftovers of wooziness knocked around. it worked for a spell – my cheeks were flushed, my lungs were clear, and i finally felt fully awake. it was a bit revelatory actually.

it was one of those moments when i remembered why those little aphorisms get stuck in the back of my head – they speak from experience.

now, go dress accordingly and get outside.

“the best is the enemy of good.”  // voltaire

it’s always within these last weeks of the year that i inevitably start to fall down the rabbit hole of the best ofs.

the barrage of lists and listicles, (yes, 100% i looked that up to make sure the context was correct), spouting out and counting down the purely subjective top tens of music, (those artists i’ve never heard of before, proving that above all else, my taste in music will confirm my age), films i don’t often to get to see in the theatre, but will fall asleep to on the sofa, and of books that well, i can only read non-fiction as of late, so let’s just cross those off the agenda.

the fact of the matter is, i never can find myself in those lists.

sure, there’s an item or two that i can recognize as being pretty good, if not entirely best, but since i’ve been keeping a running tally of some personal, and some aspirational bests – why not make a little listy of my own?

and so, without further ado, a wee bit’s top six, wait no, seven of 2014:

“loafing” is easy, but “leisure” is difficult.” // p. f. drucker

do you want to know what one of my most coveted sartorial items of lust has always been?

to own and then, subsequently wear, a pair of loafers, preferably of the penny persuasion.

i know that that must sound a paltry ambition, considering the countless other items i could list in this panoply of want that i’ve blathered on in for so long; you wouldn’t be wrong to think i could go for something a bit more audacious than a pair of loafers, but no – they’ve forever been a long-held wish.

i craved the bass weejuns or wayfarers, but the vamp was always too high and the cut too narrow, they’d never do with my flintstone feet. follow me over the years, and i would try every pair i’d come across, only to be defeated – until i just forgot for years that i wanted them.

and then, something happened. the winds of change brought the penny to the fore – and suddenly, there were so many to choose from, from lines i’d never dare look at, to those i lusted after – and lo, there was a bounty of pennies – and i, i was happy.
