“the art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.” // h.w. beecher

is basic still a loaded term, or can we get back down to them?

i don’t remember another time when such a simple word became such a loaded topic. i mean, being a bitch is one thing, (and not inherently bad), but subscribing to the notion that being basic, or hurling it as an insult, totally confused the hell out of me. you may think it a bore, but that doesn’t make it any less of a style.

are you only considered of interest if your manner of dress endorses the avant-garde? and could you really imagine a sea of junya watanabe on the sidewalks of your daily life? consider your aging aunt sylvia – what if she was decked out in the latest rei kawakubo – you know what would happen then? jeans and tees would be the vanguard – and truthfully, that’s what they’ve always been for me.

to wear them would never be considered the norm, they are the distinct outliers in my wardrobe, and because of that – for me, they are experimental and decidedly non-normcore. now, i wouldn’t expect a pair of adidas rubber slides and gym socks to go along with them; but trust when i say, basic may mean one thing to you, but probably means something entirely different to most everyone else.
