“i think the universe is pure geometry – basically, a beautiful shape twisting around and dancing over space-time.” // a.g. lisi

basic arithmetic nary gave me an issue.

i can scan the numbers, adding and subtracting – with the sort of ease that leads me to question the veracity of all grades received in maths class beyond the seventh grade; surely, there must’ve been an elaborate mistake. in multiplying and dividing, too – i am smug in the knowledge that no, i don’t need a calculator, thank you very much.

and then, i’m reminded there’s more to math than that – brought down to size by an x = 2 to the power of y, and by P = 2a + 2b. rubbing salt into these old scholastic wounds, i had to look those examples up and got sidelined for roughly 20 minutes trying to make heads or tails of them. i couldn’t, i gave up, i digress.

the solace i take from mathematical endeavours i cannot parse, is that when i can see their power, as in, hold them in my view and take in their clever tricks, i’m all right with not knowing how to work out the answers, as long as someone else can, and does so, to such amazing effect.
